Role

Okala hosted IHP’s jaguar camera trap data on the Biodiversity Dashboard to support the validation and verification of Brazil’s first biodiversity credits project, using the methodology developed and implemented by ERA Brazil.

The Problem

IHP’s jaguar conservation efforts in the Pantanal rely on innovative financing mechanisms, such as ERA Brazil’s Biodiversity Credits methodology, to fund monitoring initiatives, biodiversity protection, and community impact activities. Transparent data and verification are critical to ensuring buyer’s trust in these credits. Using an "umbrella species" approach, IHP and ERA Brazil collaborated to upload jaguar camera trap data to the Okala Biodiversity Dashboard, where individually identified jaguar home ranges can be visualized alongside raw videos and images. Third-party verifiers can audit project claims directly on the dashboard during certification.

Biodiversity credit methodlogies need scalable, transparent data pipelines
In a nascent market, building buyer trust is essential
Camera trap data offers visible evidence of impact
Few platforms are available that can easily be accessed by third-party verifiers

Our Solution

By hosting jaguar data on the Okala Biodiversity Dashboard, auditors could easily validate project claims

Camera trap data are uploaded to the biodiversity dashboard
Okala experts verified AI species labels
Project partners identified individual jaguars
Okala produced home-range maps for individuals, which were displayed on the dashboard

Okala's Biodiversity Dashboard is an exciting tool enabling us to transparently report the biodiversity impact of our projects.
