National EUDR compliance in Benin & Togo
EUDR compliance for 50,000 soya farms across Togo and Benin
The Problem
Companies sourcing agricultural commodities including soy, coffee, cocoa and cashew from West Africa are facing an immense operational challenge with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The regulation demands that any operator placing these goods on the EU market must prove, with verifiable evidence, that their products did not originate from land deforested after December 31, 2020
Over 50,000 small-holder soya farms need to be reviewed weekly over Togo and Benin
Traditional paper-based and physical audit methods are slow, expensive and not feasible at the national scale
Limited in-house capacity to use repeat-sampling and high-resolution satellite monitoring
Incorrect assessment could leave our client at risk of non-compliance, market exclusion and reputational damage

Our Solution
Okala deployed a fully automated AI pipeline that integrated farm boundaries with satellite data to deliver continuous, up-to-date compliance assessments for every farm Results were presented on our dashboard for visual interrogation
Our EUDR pipeline rapidly analysed the client's 50,000+ farm polygons and cross-referenced them with high-resolution historical and current satellite imagery to extract changes in landuse.
Any change in farm boundary our additional farms were rapidly recalculated and returned to the client
Our system provided a definitive weekly output for every single farm, flagging it as either compliant or at high risk for deforestation based on the EUDR cut-off date
Our highly visual dashboard allowed the client to rapidly review any farms that had been flagged by our automated systems and make a final decision on compliance
Our complex soya supply chain involves more than 50,000 smallholder farms across two countries. Okala provided an exciting, bespoke solution that allowed us to rapidly check for EUDR compliance. The Okala EUDR dashboard provides excellent transparency for auditors, minimising non-compliance risk and maximising our sales opportunities through a customer-centric approach.
